I was born in Aberdeen and after graduating from Edinburgh Napier University in 1991 with a degree in Interior Design I worked for many years for a contemporary design company.
Drawing and painting for me has always been a passion and I continued to further my art studies at Edinburgh College of Art before concentrating on Botanical pieces. Why Botanical Art? Well to be honest I never really thought about specialising in this form of Art but when the opportunity arose in 2007 to study a new Diploma in Botanical Illustration at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh I decided to give it a go. It was to be an 'instinctive' choice as I have always been 'drawn' to nature and I particularly love working in fine detail.
I graduated with Distinction in 2009 and then received an RHS Gold Medal for a collection of 8 Vegetable paintings in March 2010. Three paintings were acquired by the RHS Lindley Library and other pieces are in private collections. I was made an Associate with the SBA - Society of Botanical Artists in 2011
I work principally in pencil, watercolour and gouache.
I am always striving for a greater realism and dynamism in my work. Design for me is also very important and I enjoy experimenting with different perspectives and unusual compositions. I love the challenge of painting more complex and intricate subjects and my current pieces are large-scale which I really enjoy tackling. The large pieces can take me weeks and sometimes months to complete.
