Artist’s
Statement
My background is in commercial illustration,
where speed, computer manipulation, tight budget constraints, and
the insatiable pursuit of “the next new thing” drive
the artistic process. I believe my decision to work in the genre
of traditional botanical art and illustration is my personal response
to these incessant demands.
I recently acquired my Certificate
in Botanical Art and Illustration from the Denver Botanic Gardens.
Through this internationally recognized program, I received classical
training in traditional botanical illustration. Though I was already
an alumna of the New England School of Art & Design, it was
through the Botanical Illustration program that I have truly matured
as an artist. Working always from the living plant, I learned the
importance of precise draftsmanship, accurate color, believable
form, and clarity of execution. Mastery of the four media of graphite,
pen and ink, colored pencil, and watercolor were required for certification.
Through the Denver Botanic Gardens Certificate Program, I developed
skills that can only be achieved with patient observation and meticulous
attention to detail. I also discovered the joy of working in a
genre that has a centuries-old tradition of scientific accuracy
and artistic grace. Following in the footsteps of the great masters
of botanical art--both historic and contemporary--my goal is to
create art that has that same timeless quality. I strive to produce
art that educates, enchants, and endures.
